With yearlong pristine weather, Southwest Florida not only invites participating in sports, but spectator sports as well. The Boston Red Sox have called City of Palms Park in Fort Myers their spring training home since 1993. Attendance at the park for spring training exhibition games is high with a majority of tickets selling out within hours of becoming available to the public. For the 2012 season the Red Sox will move to their newly constructed stadium, JetBlue Park. JetBlue Park has been built to completely replicate Fenway Park in Boston including its dimensions, the 37 foot Green Monster, and a renovated manual scoreboard which was used at Fenway for almost 30 years.
Hammond Stadium also located in Fort Myers is the spring training home of the Minnesota Twins. In addition to holding spring training games, the stadium is also home to the Fort Myers Miracle, a class A Advanced team. With a seating capacity of 7500, the stadium is a great place to catch a ball game.
Since 1998, Germain Arena located off 1-75 in Estero has been home to the ECHL’s Florida Everblades ice hockey team. The Everblades hold affiliations with NHL teams, the Carolina Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Lighting. The team draws quite a crowd and is quite popular with residents of the area that have relocated from the north. The Everblades hold the distinction of being one of the only ECHL teams that has played in every playoff series since its inception.
